Things have been a bit slow for the Shell House Detectives so when a young girl approaches them to follow her fiancé they accept. Rowena and Ethan recently got engaged, initially he couldn't afford a ring but about three weeks ago he gave her a beautiful antique ring engraved with two of their initials. Unfortunately at about the same time he started acting strangely, distracted and sort of guilty - she wants to be sure of him before they move into together or get married.
Ally is in town when a diver is brought off a boat he suffered an extreme form of the bends and died shortly after surfacing, coincidentally Rowena's father Harry, Ethan and one of Harry's friends from the university where he lectures, Marcus were also on the boat. The men claim that they were observing the dive because Harry is gathering data for his next novel, but Ally suspects that Rowena's engagement ring may have come from a ship called the Bellingham, which wrecked off the coast carrying gold because it bears the initials of the captain's dead daughter.
But where there's gold there's competition and the men get themselves involved with the wrong sort of people. When Marcus is found dead it seems obvious he was silenced by a local gang ... or was he?
Yet another cracking mystery, everything seems plausible and you believe they have found the killer until a new piece of evidence emerges. I like the slow burn between Saffron and Mullins even more, and who doesn't love Gus with his heart of gold.
